The Chingalan dethrone Coello and Tapia: first Major triumph

At the end of a stunning tournament, Ale Galan and Federico Chingotto claim the title at the BNL Italy Major, defeating the world number ones and reigning champions in Rome, Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, in a three-set final. This victory is extremely valuable as it promises to shift the power dynamics

Ale Galan and Federico Chingotto did it. In 2024, the Spaniard and the Argentine had already managed to defeat world number ones Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello three times in six encounters, but doing it in Rome means more. Because at the Foro Italico, one of the four Majors is played, the one most loved by the players, and because a stage like the Central Court makes everything more special. The large crowd in Rome was on their side and was rewarded with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory full of spectacular plays, the kind only the greatest can deliver. Honor to the defeated, but this time the credit goes entirely to the winners, superior for most of the nearly two hours of battle.

As has happened in all but one of the clashes between these two top pairs, it also took three sets of high-speed fight in Rome to determine the best, with Chingotto omnipresent and Galan always ready to strike with overhead shots. One of the differences was in the performance of the two left-side players: Galan was almost perfect, while Tapia was less brilliant than usual with the smash, one of his best weapons, which for once brought him more pain than joy. Against two players in the physical, technical, and mental condition of Galan/Chingotto, such a shortcoming is unforgivable.

For Ale and Federico, the victory in Rome is their fourth in the last six tournaments, and their first Major. A title that doesn’t change the world ranking but promises to shift the hierarchies, as Coello/Tapia are becoming less and less unbeatable, and today the circuit has found two equally strong leaders. Padel benefits, with a show always at the top, and so do the Spaniard and the Argentine: the first two editions of the BNL Italy Major have shown that whoever wins in Rome ends the year as number one.
