How the game of padel is played

Since its origins, padel has always been a couples game with two pairs of opponents. In each game, one player of each pair plays in the right side of the court and the other on the left. These positions generally remain unchanged during the entire match. Scoring? This is just like tennis.

THE GAME

Since its origins, padel has always been a couples game with one pairs competing against another pair. In each game, one player of each pair plays in the right side of the court and the other on the left; these positions generally remain unchanged (unless for tactical reasons) during the entire match. When one partner serves, the other partner can in theory move into the other side of the court, thus in parallel to the side receiving the service - just like in tennis - but this tactic is rarely used. Normally a player playing from the right remains on the right, and similarly, a player playing from the left remains on the left regardless of the side of the service.

There are also reduced-sized padel courts (6m instead of 10m, length unvaried) that are used for singles matches. The singles game is not an officially recognised form of the game and no official tournaments include this as a formal discipline. Furthermore, singles padel is discouraged by experts for anyone who wants to improve their game. The geometry of the game changes completely when played on a narrower court which is a fundamental aspect to gain points and win matches.

SCORING

The scoring system for padel is identical to that of tennis, with matches divided into games and sets. Each match is organised around three sets, each with tie-breaks. A couple needs four points (more for eventual advantage points in the case of deuce) to win a game; six games are needed to win a set; two sets are needed to win a match. In the case of a set of six games each, the customary 7 point tie break is played until one pair reaches an advantage of two points.

For the Premier Padel circuit, some players in a recent tournament established to play the advantage system but without the so-called "golden point" introduced at an international level in 2020 for ties at a deuce.

The pairs are called to serve one game each, with each partner serving in turn.  The player serving in the first game of a set will also serve in the fifth and eventual ninth game and will also have first serve in the case of a tie break. Players change sides after every two games played.
